AN EXPLOSION of sights, sounds and tastes from around the world filled Wood Farm school last week for the annual international evening.

Scores of local people gathered at the primary school in Titup Hall Drive on Thursday, September 29 to enjoy a celebration of the myriad cultures its students hail from.

The event encourages youngsters and adults alike to take pride in their respective heritages and learn more about the cultural roots of others.

On the night audiences were wowed by a series of dance performances and music from a steel band and Oxford street band Horns of Plenty.

Tantalising treats from Asia, Jamaica, Brazil and Lithuania cooked up by local parents were on offer for hungry visitors to enjoy.

Teacher Hannah Barton said: "It was a really lovely event; we have done it annually but it has got bigger and better this year.

"There are more than 40 languages in this school and for us it's a big asset for our school how many communities and cultures we've got represented.

"We try to celebrate that and this event is a really important part of the school year."

Children also took part in a fashion show displaying traditional dress from their country of origin.

Mum Hamera Zia watched her daughter Iman, seven, take to the stage in a richly-decorated Pakistani outfit.

She said: "It was really good. We have it every year and the kits are quite excited about it."
