A FLAG celebrating bisexuality and its culture is to be flown from Oxford Town Hall.

The city council will fly the Bi Pride flag over the St Aldate's venue for the first time tomorrow to mark International Bi Visibility Day.

Earlier this year in Abingdon Conservative town councillors refused to fly the rainbow flag next June on the County Hall Museum to celebrate the Oxford Pride festival, and a committee has been set up to review the council's flags policy.

Bi Visibility Day was first celebrated in 1999, and the pink, purple and blue Bi Pride flag will be flown over the 1930s extension of the town hall to acknowledge the council's support.

Ed Turner, deputy leader of Oxford City Council, said: "As a council we are aware of the real problems still faced by the Bi community, and that having greater visibility will be important in tackling these.

"Flying this flag was an initiative of those with first-hand knowledge of these issues and we are very glad to be doing so, especially on Bi Visibility Day.

"We want Oxford to be a city which is welcoming and tolerant to all, and where discrimination has no place."

The council also plans to mark the International Trans Day of Remembrance by flying the Trans Pride flag on November 20.

Bi Visibility Day also aims to raise awareness of biphobia, dislike of bisexuality and bisexual people as a social group or as individuals.
