A COMEDY club has found a new home in East Oxford after having to move out of its city centre premises.

In January, Glee Club will start holding its regular comedy evenings at The Bullingdon in Cowley Road instead.

It comes after bosses said they would have to vacate their building in Hythe Bridge Street after owner Nuffield College gave six months' notice.

The college struck a multi-million pound deal last year to take ownership of land near Frideswide Square and wants to redevelop the area.

But it meant Glee and neighbouring nightclub Wahoo were told they had to find new premises.

This morning the comedy club's director, Mark Tughan, said: "We’re very proud of our track record, so we’re thrilled that we’ll be continuing to bring quality stand-up to Oxfordshire, in partnership with The Bullingdon, in just a few short months.

"We're saddened to be leaving our Hythe Bridge Street premises. Since opening in April 2010 with Shappi Khorsandi and Angelos Epithemiou, we have hosted some incredible shows, including appearances from Sarah Millican, Russell Kane, Ross Noble and Jack Whitehall.

"But the move marks the beginning of a new Glee era that we hope will be even more exciting."

The Bullingdon general manager Paul Williams said: “We are really excited to be partnering with such an iconic brand and helping to bring comedy to Oxford.

"We have established ourselves as a top music venue in the city, and now we are proud to be offering the best comedy available too.”

The first Glee show at the Bullingdon will take place on January 14.

But before the doors close at its Hythe Bridge Street premises, there will be a ‘final season’ featuring several well-known comedians.

Stand up acts set to appear include multi-award winner James Acaster on September 22, comedians and podcasters Elis James and John Robins on October 7, Australian Felicity Ward on October 14 and Joel Dommett on October 28.

Also lined up are Imran Yusef, Carl Donnelly, storyteller James Dowdeswell, and comic news broadcaster Jonathan Pie.

The Glee is the county's only dedicated comedy venue and has hosted some 400 shows over the past six years.

Mr Tughan added: "Closing with this run of shows means we'll be leaving the location on a real high.

"But we look forward to welcoming our audiences to The Bullingdon in January, when we’ll be returning with even more great names."
