MORE than six tonnes of glass was collected and recycled following last week's Cropredy Festival, council officers have said.

Between August 11 and 13 music lovers soaked in the sun and enjoyed gigs by the likes of pop veterans Madness and folk-rock favourites Steeleye Span.

Throughout the festival fans were encouraged to sort their used glass into special recycling bins provided by Cherwell District Council.

The council's lead member for clean and green Debbie Pickford said: "Cropredy has been a highlight of the entertainment calendar for decades now and it is wonderful to see tens of thousands of people enjoying themselves in the district.

"The visitors to both the main festival site and related events in the village generate a large amount of waste, and this is an opportunity for us to promote our policy of building a cleaner and greener district.

"Six tonnes is not far off the record we set last year so I congratulate the fans for doing such a good job of correctly separating out their waste."

The final figure included 4.3 tonnes collected at the main festival site and 1.7 from around the village.
