ANTICIPATION is growing among parents and children as the final touches are put to a new primary school opening in September which will have technology at its heart.

With less than a month to go until the grand unveiling, it is all hands on deck at Didcot Primary Academy in Great Western Park which will school over 400 children when full.

Dozens of workers have been on site in recent weeks to ensure that it is ready for business when it officially opens on Wednesday, September 7.

The school promises pupils will have access to state-of-the-art facilities when they start, including interactive white boards, an IT suite and an outside amphitheatre.

Mother-of-two and Great Western Park resident, Lizzy Wood, said she was excited to be part of the new local school by enrolling four-year-old son Harry in the first reception class.

The 37-year-old said: "Harry went to nursery in Harwell because it was outstanding and all his friends are going to their primary school.

"We did consider about doing the same but we wanted to support our local school.

"There has already been a picnic which we have been on with some of the other parents and their children who will be starting with Harry so that was lovely.

"We're really hoping he will be able to make lots of new friends and enjoy learning at the school."

A Facebook group has already been set up by for parents whose children will be starting the school.

Mrs Wood added: "It is a great idea to bring people from the estate together.

"I really hope a community will grow from this, not just for Harry so he is able to make lots of friends, but also for us as parents."

Initially only three classes were meant to start in September but due to demand this has been increased to five.

Headteacher, Alison Ashcroft, said the staff were raring to go and in the last few weeks signage and furniture were all that is left to be done.

She said: "We are so excited about opening in September and I am delighted with the team we have recruited in the teaching crisis, their expertise will hopefully get our pupils off to a flying start.

"We have been in such high demand that we have had to start an extra two classes in September which is fantastic.

"Every September we will start two new reception classes until we reach our capacity of 420 pupils.

"I know some of the parents have already been out together on picnics and I really hope this community spirit will continue as the school grows."

The school has already established links with the Oxfordshire University Technical College and hopes to build a strong relationship with the secondary school opening next September.

Mrs Ashcroft added: "We are taking every opportunity we can to ensure we provide a tailor made curriculum for our students.

"We will have interactive white boards, iPads and laptops for the students coming in too in the next few weeks.

"Technology is a really important part of their learning - they're not jut using the technology to find information, they're also using it to create information as well."
