Electronic whiteboards, smartphones, iPadsand coding – the modern classroom is a far cry from those 30 years ago.

But as our pictures of Temple Cowley School in Oxford in the 1980s show, pupils could still have plenty of fun in the decade when the must-have gadget was the Sony Walkman, boys wore as much make-up as girls as the New Romantic craze hit fashion and everyone was trying to solve the devilish Rubik's cube.

Our reporters at the time covered fashion shows, cross country races and there was even a special appearance on a popular children's television programme.

Here are a few selections from our archive- click above to see our collection of images.

In May 1983 there were winning smiles from the school's runners after they swept the board at the Oxfordshire Middle Schools cross country championships.

The school won both the boys and girls team sections, with pupil Darren Bryan taking the boy's individual title.

Technology was bought to the fore in April 1981 when pupils carried out rehearsals for their play "Video Play".

The school's drama group, which wrote and performed the play, based it on various scenes from a video tape.

And in March 1984, the bright lights of television beckoned for youngsters who were invited to take part in a new quiz show.

The four man team - captain Anthony Dubock, Alan Cox, Leigh Barrett and Allison Reader, all 12, and reserve Darren Finlay - were to go to Manchester to record a version of the show Star Strider.
