AN elderly driver has died after crashing into parked cars on a residential street in Oxford.

Thames Valley Police cordoned off Alexandra Road off Botley Road yesterday after he reportedly reversed into a line of parked cars, and this morning confirmed that he has since died.

Spokesman James Williams said: "His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time. We have specifically trained officers who are supporting the family.

"We continue to investigate the cause of this road traffic collision."

The force has not yet revealed the circumstances surrounding the crash at about 11.45am, in which residents said little damage was done aside from a small dent to a white van.

A witness who did not want to be named said: "An elderly man was sitting in his car with the door open and for whatever reason the vehicle accelerated backwards.

"In the process the door hit a van and was knocked backwards. He then fell out of the vehicle.

"It's a tragedy."

Two police vans and officers were called to the scene after the crash and only allowed residents to access the street, before lifting the cordon later in the afternoon.

Michelle Archer, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service, said: "We treated an elderly gentleman suffering serious injuries, and following assement and treatment at the scene, he was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital."
