BRIMMING bins that were left to fester on the roadside in Kennington yesterday failed to be emptied because of a mechanical issue.

Residents in part of The Avenue were confused to find that their bins had been neglected by waste collectors working for Vale of White Horse District Council, who were spotted returning to the village this morning one day after their scheduled round.

Gavin Walton, spokesman for the council, said: "There were mechanical problems with the vehicle collecting in that area.

"The delays resulting from the breakdown meant the collection crew were unable to complete the scheduled round on Thursday.

"They returned this morning to complete collections in Kennington before starting on Friday’s round in Abingdon."

The council listed other reasons why bins may not be emptied, including if a recyling bin has the wrong things in it.

Mr Walton added: "Some of the most common misplaced items are things like food waste and dirty nappies which can end up covering large amounts of recycling in the back of the lorry.

"That whole load can then get rejected, which is a waste of otherwise good recyclable materials.

"When the crews spot incorrect items, they’ll leave a tag on the bin to explain why they haven’t emptied it and will come and empty it on the next scheduled collection day providing the incorrect items have been removed."
