A TERMINALLY ill cancer patient wants more special memories in the last six months of his life after a day in the pit lane at the British Grand Prix.

Peter Epsley, from Didcot, has already proposed to his fiancee Teresa Savage and the pair will marry at the end of the month.

The 56-year-old former support worker for youth offenders in Oxfordshire enjoyed a helicopter ride and exclusive pit lane access on Sunday to catch Lewis Hamilton winning his fourth British Grand Prix.

Mr Epsley said: "I have been an armchair fan of Formula One for years and after being told about my cancer I just decided we should go.

"We didn't want to do it in half measures so we went all out."

He added: "We paid for a helicopter ride to Silverstone, which was amazing, and then managed to blag our way into the pit area.

"We saw Eddie Jordan, David Coulthard, and former driver Mark Webber as they went live on Channel 4. It was an amazing experience.

"We took some great pictures of the day, which we will keep to remember it."

The experience cost the Didcot man around £2,000, including a hotel stay near the race track and the helicopter ride.

The the pit lane access and chance to sit in the cockpit of a McLaren car were welcome extras.

Mr Epsley said he planned on making the most of the final few months of his life and wanted more moments like Sunday.

He said a flying tour of the county was top of his list.

He said: "It was hard to hear and it's tough to go through but I just want to make as many memories as I can while I'm still here.

"I don't have anything else planned for definite but I would really like to take a flight over Oxfordshire and have the experience of seeing everything from the sky."

He added: "I'm trying to achieve as much as possible as I know it's always harder for the people you leave behind.

"I proposed to Teresa shortly after the news and the wedding later this month should be very special indeed."
