Trade unionists in Oxfordshire have given their backing to under-fire Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Oxford & District Trades Union Council passed a motion pledging support for Mr Corbyn ahead of a challenge to his leadership from fellow Labour MP Angela Eagle.

The motion, which passed unanimously, stated: "We call on Oxford &District Trades Union Council to support and organise a public meeting in support of Jeremy Corbyn against the outrageous attacks from the Parliamentary Labour Party.

"Jeremy was elected as leader through a democratic process by the membership of the Labour Party and as such the PLP should stand behind Jeremy and further fight the Tory austerity measures."

Mr Corbyn has faced sustained criticism of his leadership since the EU referendum result two weeks ago, leading to most of his shadow cabinet resigning.

Ms Eagle will today officially challenge him, which will prompt a leadership election.

Oxford Trades Union Council president Pol o Ceallaigh said: "Trades Council delegates tonight gave a clear message to all those who are in a position to influence events in the Labour Party.

"It is time to unite around the anti-austerity agenda under Jeremy Corbyn as leader elected by an overwhelming majority."
