MUSIC chain Fopp will return to Oxford next month although it has not yet revealed a location for the new store.

The retailer, which has eight shops across the UK, previously traded from a unit in Gloucester Green but announced its closure at the end of 2008.

Now it is planning to come back, two years after its parent company HMV closed its Cornmarket Street branch.

Spokeswoman Laura Thomas said: "We are delighted to announce that July will see the opening of a new Fopp store in Oxford.

"We will release precise details of the store's location closer to the time.

"As a vibrant music and student city Oxford is the perfect match with Fopp.

"Oxford shoppers will find a wide range of vinyl, CDs, Blu-Rays, DVDs, and music and film related T-shirts and merchandise."

Senior events manager for Fopp Simon Eltringham said there would be live music performances in the new store.

He added: "Oxford is a great city and we have been out of it for too long."

Ronan Munro, editor of Oxfordshire music magazine Nightshift, said Blackwell's in Broad Street had been flying the flag for music sales following the closure of HMV.

He added: "In some ways Fopp will provide competition for Truck on Cowley Road. People who want to pick up an Adele album won't necessarily want to make the trip to Truck."

The shop units previously occupied by HMV in Cornmarket Street until it closed in June 2014 have not yet reopened.
