A woman was hit in the face and sexually assaulted by a man in Witney in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At around 3am a woman in her thirties was walking on a path in Langdale Common when the offender, a man she did not know, approached her from behind.

He struck her round the face before sexually assaulting her.

It is believed he may have been disturbed by other people in the area and then left the scene.

Thames Valley police says the offender is white, approximately 6ft, has short brown hair, and was wearing a black jacket at the time of the incident.

Det Insp Larry Johnson, from Oxfordshire Force CID, said: "Detectives are investigating the circumstances of this incident and we are working to establish the identity of the offender.

"At around this time, two women were walking along the same path in the direction of the offender and victim.

"It is possible they may be witnesses and have important information about what has happened. I would encourage these women to come forward and speak to police.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who was in the area of Witan Way, close to the entrance to Langdale Common and near a kebab van, as they may also have information which could assist our investigation.

"The victim is being supported by specially trained officers at this time.

"I understand this incident could cause the community some concerns therefore additional patrols are taking place. If anyone wishes to raise any issues, please speak to an officer in the area or call 101."
