AN ILLEGAL driver, who pretended his brother was at the wheel when he was caught speeding, has been jailed.

Jimmy Odumosu tried to fool police and magistrates into thinking he was not driving a Vauxhall Golf because he had not passed his driving test.

The 39-year-old, who was also driving without insurance, was jailed for eight months for perverting the course of justice and was handed a two-year driving ban.

Sentencing at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, Judge Peter Ross said: "Quite why you chose not to follow the lawful route of passing a test and getting insurance is completely unclear. Clearly this was the normal thing for you."

Prosecutor Matthew Walsh said Odumosu registered the car in a different name to his home in Ashlong Road, Oxford.

He said the defendant was caught speeding on Marston Ferry Road on April 17, 2014, and the police sent a prosecution notice to his home 12 days later.

Mr Walsh said unemployed freelance IT consultant Odumosu completed the form with his brother's DVLA details and sent it back to officers on May 6.

The prosecutor said Odumosu continued to drive but was then caught speeding in Lamborough Hill, Wootton, near Abingdon, on January 16 last year.

He said the defendant again completed the form sent to his home address by officers, pretending his brother was the driver of the car.

Mr Walsh said Odumosu was caught speeding for a third time in Chipping Norton on August 12 last year, but police decided to contact his brother about the offences.

The prosecutor said the defendant's brother, who spent a lot of time abroad and did not have a car in the UK, was "surprised", suspecting Odumosu was involved.

Officers interviewed Odumosu, who admitted he was trying to avoid police finding out he did not have a driving licence.

Defence barrister Satveer Pnaiser said the defendant was very remorseful and had since sold the car.

Odumosu was also ordered to pay £500 costs and a victim surcharge.
