EVER found yourself stuck with a broken table, or stumped when it comes to a damaged computer?

If this sounds like you, then a new "fix it" cafe set up in Headington might just be the answer to your needs.

The weekly meeting, held at the Bullingdon Community Centre, invites residents to bring in their damaged household items so they can be fixed by a team of volunteers.

The cafe was started back in January by Barbara Bryant, a trustee from the Bullingdon Community Association, who had initially wanted to set up a new group for older people and applied for a grant from Oxford City Council to get it underway.

She said: "We wanted more groups for older people in the centre but especially something that would be more interesting for men.

"Originally the cafe was for people to come in and make their own things like bird boxes and tables, but then we found the people who did come in were quite skilled so they were able to help other people."

Since then the volunteers have invited people to bring in their damaged possessions, and they are given help in fixing them rather than having to throw them away.

With a healthy team of helpers, what the group needs now is more people to bring in items to be fixed.

Mrs Bryant, of Bulan Road, added: "It's all about trying to match up volunteers with other people who they might be able to help.

"It's also a social event really, it's mainly men and people can come in and have a biscuit and cup of tea while they're here.

"We are able to fix most things, but obviously we can't guarantee that we will be able to fix everything."

Among the items the group have helped to fix are a Dyson hoover and even an ornamental roof to go over a garden wishing well.

About 12 people are currently attending the cafe each week on a Tuesday.

One of those is 68-year-old Roy Poyser, from Headington, who first heard about the group in February and came along.

He said: "I do quite a bit of volunteering and when I spotted the cafe I thought it would be good to help people repair their things.

"I like the challenge of fixing items and it's quite exciting because you never know what is going to come along each week.

"It also means we get our chance to help the community."

The centre also hosts a regular toddler group, martial arts classes and drama groups among other activities.

The cafe takes place every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm. For more information and to find out what can be fixed call Mrs Bryant on 07792 491350.
