PRIMARY school children swapped their school uniforms for chef's aprons on a healthy eating day.

The children at St Amand's Catholic Primary School in East Hendred learnt about the benefits of eating well then tried to put their knowledge into practice in the kitchen.

The session on Tuesday was run by school catering company Food & More, which serves 112 schools in Oxfordshire.

Company nutritionist Emma Young led an assembly explaining the benefits of healthy eating and the importance of eating the right foods to help children's development.

This was followed by a practical session as pupils cooked up a host of dishes with "development chef" Sheelin Davies.

Finally the youngsters then put their food knowledge to the test in a quiz with prizes for the winners.

Nicola Thompson from Food & More explained: "We are always looking for fun and interesting ways to help educate children about healthy eating and they really enjoyed today’s activities.

"One of the messages we wanted to get across is that a healthy diet during the early years means they stand a good chance of carrying these habits throughout their lives.

"In short, educating children on healthy eating can lay the path for a healthy life."
