A husband has denied attacking his lodger and insisted he had no suspicions his then-wife was having an affair, a court heard.

Tomasz Golabek is accused of luring his lodger Maciej Pawlek back to their Banbury home and assaulting him because he believed he was having an affair with his wife.

A jury of nine men and three women at Oxford Crown Court heard Mr Pawlek arrived at the house in Mold Crescent and was ambushed by Golabek and two unknown men.

But giving evidence yesterday[may18] Golabek denied any knowledge of the attack.

The 34-year-old said he got home from work and watched TV until Mr Pawlek returned to the property with two black eyes.

He added: "He started shouting at me, saying that everything was my fault.

"When he entered the house he had black eyes.

"He told me it was my fault."

Golabek told the jury he asked his lodger to shut up and leave the house, but insisted he had not attacked him.

Prosecutor Julian Lynch said Mr Pawlek was slapped, punched and kicked by Golabek and two others and threatened to have his fingers chopped off and broken and a bottle smashed over his head.

The court heard Mr Pawlek was left with a fractured cheek, two black eyes, a bump on the head and a bloody nose.

Golabek admitted his wife of 10 years had left their home two days before the incident on November 19, 2014, but said he had no suspicions she was being unfaithful.

He denies one count of falsely imprisoning Mr Pawlek and of inflicting grievous bodily harm on him.

The trial continues.
