ISSUES affecting people with disabilities across the county were discussed at an event at The Barn, Greater Leys last week.

More than 40 people attended GreenSquare housing association's Oxfordshire Disability Forum, a regular event aimed at disabled residents in the local area.

During the meeting on Thursday, May 12, county and city councillor John Tanner discussed highways issues related to people with disabilities such as dropped kerbs, issues with disabled parking bays and parking on pavements.

GreenSquare's chief executive Howard Toplis spoke about how recent government rent cuts will affect people with disabilities, as well as Oxford East MP Andrew Smith, who discussed the implications of the Conservative budget as a whole.

Lew Fryer, GreenSquare's Community Involvement Officer, said: "I'm glad that so many people took advantage of the opportunity to hear from the experts, to ask questions and to come along and have their say. Everyone seemed very interested in the topics being discussed.”

Attendees were also handed bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from the Oxford Foodbank to take away and Eatwells Community Cafe, run by Barton Community Association, provided a buffet lunch for the event. People also had the chance to enter a free raffle to win disability aids.
