A MAN who spends his days coaching footballers how to win matches has proved he has the ability to sparkle on the dance floor.

Head of performance and analysis at Oxford United Dan Bond was crowned the winner of Strictly Oxford 2016 on Sunday night.

Despite admitting he could not dance at all when he first started rehearsing for the competition, the 25-year-old stole the show and proudly lifted his glitterball trophy in front of an 800-strong audience at the New Theatre.

Mr Bond, who lives in Headington, said: "I've still not come off cloud nine. I got a little cheer when I came into work the next day.

"Our chairman was on the radio being interviewed about how it felt to be family club of the year [at the Football League award] and he said he was very proud but not as proud as when I won Strictly Oxford."

Swapping football for foxtrot, Mr Bond was partnered with experienced dancer Katie Douglas as part of the contest.

Along with 23 other couples, they performed a jive and a waltz as well as a group freestyle.

He added: "I knew I wanted to be in the top three but when they said who had come third and second I felt a bit like 'oh' because I didn't think I'd been good enough to come first.

"Then when they said my number I just thought 'wow'.

"I wish I could have bottled it up, I don't remember so much of it now.

"Katie is on cloud nine as well. It was a really good experience.

"I just want to thank all the pro dancers and organisers Andrzej and Jo, and especially Katie."

Each Strictly contestant was paired up with a professional dancer and then had about eight weeks to master the three dances.

The competition is in its fifth year and raises money for Vale House, a specialist dementia care home in Littlemore.

On the night of the show organisers announced that nearly £40,000 had been raised for the charity.

In second place was chief executive of Experience Oxfordshire Hayley Beer-Gamage with her partner Lee Barrett. Coming in third was director of Electric hair salon Louise Martinez and her partner Richard Maddock.

Andrzej Mialkowski, of Step by Step dance school in Headington, said he was so proud of everyone who had been involved in making the show a success.

He said: "Well done to everyone at Strictly Oxford 2016.

"Dancers, contestants, the show dancers, all the team who helped organise it, you all make me very proud.

"Thank you to everybody who made the after party happen too. It was amazing."
