A MOTHER-OF-THREE has said she is terrified for her children's safety due to cars allegedly speeding at more than three times the limit in a Littlemore road.

Amanda Rogers, 40, said something had to be done to stop drivers racing along the road at speeds she estimates as up to 70mph in a 20mph zone.

It comes after a crash in the road on Tuesday when a car overturned but the driver left the scene before paramedics could treat him for a head injury.

Full-time mum Ms Rogers, who lives at the junction of Sandy Lane West and Spring Lane, said: "I wish someone would give me a speed gun - the cars are going as fast as 70mph.

"I have been in touch with Highways England, Littlemore Parish Council, Oxfordshire County Council and the police about it.

"It could mean a child or a grown up being knocked down - I do not want anything awful to happen.

"When I go out with my kids I feel fearful for them, I would not let me eight-year-old cross the road by himself whether day or night."

Sandy Lane West is home to The Oxford Academy secondary school and St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, and Mrs Rogers said she felt children walking to school were not safe.

The mother of 18-year-old Jack, eight-year-old George and two-year-old Ava said: "There are speed signs for a 20mph zone along there but you cannot see them because they are in the bushes, which does not help.

"Even through the day people are driving too fast, but at night it is worse.

"They have to do something, whether chicanes or a speed camera or a crossing.

"Even just a zebra crossing could be good as a deterrent."

Residents in Oxford Road, at the other end of Littlemore, have also complained about traffic being too fast and cars being damaged as a result of inconsiderate drivers.

Littlemore Parish Council transport representative Dorian Hancock said he agreed with Ms Rogers that a measure such as a crossing could slow traffic down.

He said: "I am very concerned.

"At the last parish council meeting we identified that putting a pedestrian crossing in Sandy Lane West would in itself help.

"In Littlemore we have seen cars parking in narrow roads and that can slow traffic down but we do not have that situation in Sandy Lane West.

"Perhaps a cost effective solution would be the flashing signs with sensors that light up if you are driving above the speed limit.

"I would encourage people to write to their elected representatives about the issue to encourage them to look into how to sort it."
