PINK stickers featuring a ‘Dog Poo Fairy’ will be slapped on bins urging owners to clean up after their pets.

Members of Blackbird Leys Parish Council ordered 100 of the striking Keep Britain Tidy posters as part of a campaign against the scourge of dog mess.

The move comes after an awareness and enforcement operation by Oxford City Council led to a drop in the number of incidents in the Leys at the start of this year.

Parish councillor John Dillon has volunteered to put the posters on dog bins around the estate over the coming weeks.

He said: “I am happy with the stickers. Anything to bring it to people’s minds and say ‘Come on, pick it up’ is a good thing.

“It only takes a few seconds and the more visual reminders that are out there, the better.”

In February and last month the city council monitored ‘hotspots’ such as Blackbird Leys Park and Gillians Park, handing out free bags and information to dog walkers.

Community response officer Nick Prior said: “I extended the enforcement period an extra week to give us more time to go out on patrol.

“There was good feedback and a positive response when we went out and people in the community put up the signs.”

Staff wore high-visibility jackets for part of the period and plain clothes at other points, as Mr Prior said people tended to “run away” from uniformed officers.

Although no dog owners were caught or issued with fixed-penalty notices on the spot over the two months, there was a marked decrease in incidents.

Mr Prior added said: “In the areas that were monitored dog fouling incidents went down from 38 to 19.”

Alongside the ‘poo fairy’ stickers, a range of weather-proof signs is being considered.

Slogans under discussion include “Bag that poo, any rubbish bin will do” and “We’re watching you”.

Parish council clerk Nicky Clargo said: “There is no decision yet on the signs.

“I am going to redesign the posters for them and then we will decide whether we want plastic ones or roller-ball ones that can move around.

“They should cost about £40 each.”
