No escape for illegal drivers

Illegal drivers have no place to hide from detection in Oxford.

Hundreds of legal drivers pass by the police in-car automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system every day relatively unnoticed.

But when the on-board computer spots a driver who should not be on the road, police can pull the motorist over and get their vehicle off the streets.

Today, I went on patrol with Pc Kevin Crick, who stopped a driver in Barns Road, Cowley, after his number plate was flagged up on the computer.

Within an hour, the car was towed away after the police national computer showed it was being driven with no licence or MoT - and the 20-year-old driver was under arrest.

Pc Crick said the in-car system is not a form of 'big brother' but stopped illegal drivers and criminals going about their business.

Insp Steve Bridges said the camera and computer were valuable investigative tools. He said: "Finding people who have not insured their car or are disqualified from driving helps us target criminality on the roads. Records show 75 per cent of disqualified drivers have previous criminal records. Quite often when people are stopped with an illegal vehicle on the road, it will lead to other things."

Later, the computer in Pc Crick's police car spotted two other vehicles being driven illegally - but both were lost in traffic.

However, it was the policeman's eye and not the technology which spotted the next traffic offender who was driving along Iffley Road speaking on his mobile phone.

Robert Marsh, 33, of Birmingham, accepted a mobile phone awareness course, costing £74, in return for not having three points on his licence.

He said: "I've got no excuse as I've got hands-free in my car, which makes it worse. I'm just grateful I haven't got three points. Hopefully, it will make me think."

Mr Bridges added: "The ANPR can find drivers everything from armed robbery to having no tax.

"The amount of vehicles being seized is tailing off but there is still a sufficient amount of vehicles on the road being driven illegally."

Adi,there is no excuse for letting your insurance expire, forget or not, what if you had been in an accident?,i was hit by an uninsured driver and did get paid in the end by the driver but it took a long time.

Robert Marsh......clearly sorry for being caught, not sorry for commiting the offence!!!!.Anybody caught using a mobile while driving should get the following punishment.....

(1)mobile phone should be confiscated and destroyed

(2)the vehicle should be crushed.

Now,i wonder how many would do it then????

Whats with all this vehicle crushing? Its so stupid, cars are worth tens of thousands of pounds, the police should sell them! So much for being environmentally friendly!!!

I agree completely with the used of these computers they are definately worth the cost!

I do think that confiscating peoples cars is a bit extream though, but I do see the thinking behind the suggestion. All i'm think is that if cars are cofiscated then this will lead in an increase of car thefts, mainly in Burglaries (to get the keys). After all you're obviously not law abiding if you commit a driving offence so like they say above those breaking the road laws are more likely to commit other crimes.

Criminals will always be criminals!

I had my car cloned. I received a speeding fine. I asked for the photo's of the car.. and Yes some women driving 'my' car. I had to have my number plate changed or I would have been stopped all the time as the only thing the Police could do was put a marker on the number plate! I hope the a**e who did it has been caught by now! Think this will work and catch all those people who think they are untouchable!
Get more on the road!!! Nothing to worry about if you've done nowt wrong!!!

The crushing comment was a joke "dave",if you want to enforce a law,hit people in the pocket, its the only thing people care about these days. And for you information i get crushed every night as my bed stays the same size, but my wife gets bigger, lifes not fair my friend

Doesn't this just encourage thieves to steal someone else's numberplate and declare their own car off road? That means no tax, no MOT, no insurance...
