The makers of American television show Glee may be forced to change the programme's name after losing a landmark appeal ruling to a comedy club chain of the same name, which has a branch in Oxford.

Comic Enterprises, which owns Glee Club comedy venues, argued in the High Court that the show's producers, 20th Century Fox, had breached its trademark right to the name Glee.

Glee Club owner Mark Tughan posted the good news on Twitter.

As well as owning the club in Hythe Bridge Street, the company also own comedy clubs in Birmingham, Cardiff and Nottingham.

The appeal court judges will now consider whether their ruling is affected by EU trademark law.
