MORE than 5,000 Wembley tickets have been snapped up by Oxford United fans in the first day of going on sale.

The U's take on Barnsley at the home of English football in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final on April 3.

Tickets became available to season ticket holders only yesterday and fans responded in their droves, with 3,951 bought in the first four hours.

With supporters able to buy tickets over the phone until 8pm and online throughout the evening, the club announced they had hit the 5,000-mark.

Communications manager Chris Williams said: "Selling 5,000 in the first day is a fantastic start.

"The demand was huge in the first couple of hours with season ticket holders booking for friends and family.

"Lunchtime was busy, but it has been busy all the way through the day because the online tickets are proving extremely popular and it is the easiest way to book."

United booked their place in the final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Millwall at the Kassam Stadium last Tuesday.

The club received an initial allocation of 40,313 tickets in the east side of Wembley stadium, with season ticket holders able to buy a maximum of six each.

They will go on general sale from 8am on Monday, February 15.

Prices range between £20-£60 for adults, and £10-£30 for under 17s and over 65s.
