SEVEN men have been bailed by police and one remains in custody after clashes at Oxford United's football match against Millwall FC on Tuesday, it was confirmed tonight.

Thames Valley Police said officers faced violence from a "sizeable number" of people, with horses also attacked, and several arrests were made.

Tonight, a spokesman said:

  • A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been bailed until April 12.

  • A 32-year-old man from London arrested on suspicion of attempting to enter a football match whilst drunk was been bailed until April 7.

  • A 17-year-old boy from Bexley arrested on suspicion of affray has been bailed until March 18.
  • A 24-year old man from Bexley arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of a Class A drug has been bailed until April 4.
  • A 56-year-old man from Oxford arrested on suspicion of affray has been bailed until April 13.
  • A 20-year-old man from Wantage arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon has been bailed until April 18.
  • A 54-year-old man from Epping arrested on suspicion of assault with injury has been bailed until March 18.
  • A 19-year-old man from Oxford arrested on suspicion of affray remains in police custody.

Local Police Area Commander for Oxford Christian Bunt said a post-match investigation continued.

He said: “Unfortunately we had a sizeable number of people who associate themselves with Millwall and Oxford Football Clubs who had clearly come to the game to only cause trouble.

“It is a great shame that these individuals ruin football events for genuine supporters who attended the match peacefully.

"“If you are identified as being involved in the trouble last night then expect a knock at the door soon."

Sgt Spencer Kervin, head of Thames Valley Police Mounted section added: “I am very disappointed in the behaviour towards the horses, of the minority who call themselves fans.

"Officers on the horses have a job to do, and I don’t expect to come under attack from bottles and stones as a result of them trying to keep the peace."
