THREE quarters of people in Oxford work out regularly according to a new survey that has named it the UK's 'fittest city'.

The survey of 2,000 found the city had the highest number of people taking part in regular exercise in the country.

The figures, from Adapt Nutrition, said 74 per cent of people worked out at least once a week.

Oxford City Council executive board member for leisure, sport and events Mark Lygo said: "I am really pleased to see that more and more people are taking part in sport, activities and regular exercise in Oxford.

"Not only is regular exercise good for mental and physical health, it is also fun.

"Oxford City Council is committed to continuing this trend and will continue to invest in affordable sports and exercise opportunities for communities across the city."

Oxford pipped Liverpool to the post, where 65 per cent of people were found to exercise once a week. Coming in third was Manchester with 63 per cent.
