A 13-year-old boy from Abingdon has been ordered to pay £100 after he admitted burning down a barn and causing £80,000 worth of damage.

The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, pleaded guilty to one charge of arson at Oxford Youth Court.

He admitted setting fire to a barn on Steventon Road, East Hanney, at about 5pm on Friday, October 30.

Thames Valley Police, who charged him on November 20, said the fire caused £80,000 worth of damage.

He was sentenced on Wednesday, December 9, to a 12-month referral order, and told to pay £85 legal costs and a £15 victims' surcharge.

Investigating officer PC Mark Allmond of Abingdon CID said: "This conviction brings some closure to the victim who suffered a substantial loss to property and his livelihood.

"The police and the fire service worked closely together to achieve a positive outcome for this rural crime.

"I hope this case sends out a clear message to anyone who commits such crimes that we will investigate and work with the Crown Prosecution Service to bring offenders to justice."

Three teenage boys were initially arrested as part of the investigation into the arson.
