THE Mayor of Witney has penned a heartfelt letter to the town's French twin, offering support and condolences from all the community in wake of the Paris attacks.

Witney Town Council sent the message from mayor Jim King to mayor of Le Touquet, Monsieur Daniel Fasquelle.

The letter follows the terrorist attacks across Paris on Friday night, which killed at least 129 people and wounded many more. Gunmen burst into Bataclan theatre and shot innocent concert-goers, while terrorists across the city shot at people eating out at restaurants and walking in the street.

In the letter to the Le Touquet mayor, Mr King wrote: "It is with deep shock and sadness that we heard the news of the attacks in Paris.

"On behalf of the people in Witney I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the people of Paris, Le Touquet, and all of France, to all the victims and their families and those that have suffered as a result of the attacks.

"We have a strong Twinning Association and the twinning movement encourages European towns to link with each other, to encourage the exploration of each other's countries, culture and lives and to nurture an understanding in the hope of greater accord between us.

"The results of the attacks will resonate with us all and the effects of the suffering in Parish will impact on all Frances's neighbours and friends.

"The strength of the ties between our towns reflects our enduing friendship and our shared values of community, freedom and tolerance. Our thoughts are with you all at this time of tragedy.

"Witney stands with you."
