PRIME Minister David Cameron has publicly backed Chipping Norton to win this year's Great British High Street competition by announcing his support on television.

The Witney MP, who calls Chipping Norton his hometown, was seen on Prime Minister's Questions today discussing the national competition.

The Oxfordshire town is in the running to win the Market Town category of the high street awards, and is currently beating rival towns in its category Helmsley and Colne.

Mr Cameron was seen on PMQs making a playful joke towards fellow MP Dr James Davies of Vale of Clwyd, whose town of Prestatyn is also in the competition.

Prestatyn is in the Coastal Community category against Bognor Regis and Amble.

The Prime Minister said to everyone in the room, with many watching on live television: "While I certainly join him [Dr Davies] in congratulating Prestatyn - I don't know whether Prestatyn is in the same category for this prize as my home town Chipping Norton which has also been nominated, so I might have some conflicts of interest."

Mr Cameron has also tweeted his support on social media site Twitter in recent weeks, saying: "Delighted to support Chipping Norton in this year's #GBHighSt Awards"

With just less than a week until the voting deadline Shaun Fagan, who entered the town into the competition, is urging people to vote every day for Chipping Norton to win.

Mr Fagan, of tourism group Experience Oxfordshire, said: "It's fantastic that David Cameron is behind us. To know our MP is supporting us is great but to also know that our MP is the Prime Minister is even better.

"He has tweeted us a few times too, showing support.

"We're just doing everything we can now, pushing from every angle, to try and win. We want people to vote, and we want them to vote every day. We're not letting our foot off the pedal. We don't want to fall at the last hurdle."

Earlier this month residents went all out in decorating the town after Great British High Street judge Andy Godfrey visited to give his verdict, with Mr Fagan giving him a special tour. The judge's vote makes up 50 per cent of the verdict, with the public vote making up the other 50 per cent.

Competition winners in each of the seven categories get a share of a prize pot worth £80,000 which includes expert training and tailor-made tips from Google’s training taskforce for one hundred of their shops, bars and restaurants.

Visit chippy2win.com between now and November 13 to vote for Chipping Norton. Voting can be done every day, not just once.
