It's showtime, as Katherine MacAlister discovers, for one of the last productions at an historic venue due for demolition

Are you listening carefully, then I’ll begin.

Flintlock Theatre is hosting a Speakeasy night in the Oxford Sports and Social Club at the Mini Factory, taking audiences back to the 1950s, where guests will encounter apron-clad housewives and moral guardians alongside rock ‘n’ roll gods and convention-busting teenagers as political and religious upheaval explodes around them.

More poignantly, this will, sadly be one of the final celebrations that take place in this historic building because it is being demolished in April next year “The Oxford Sports and Social Club has been a key part of Oxford’s working history and this event will celebrate its undisturbed charm and the era when it was at its zenith,” Anna Colyer, Flintlock’s Co-Artistic Director, says.

Flintlock is a celebrated and growing local theatre company, with two UK tours under its belt, most recently with Don Q which was staged at Pegasus, The Theatre Chipping Norton and OFS among others. It’s fundraising work helps towards staging future work, raises awareness and allows the company’s loyal customers the chance for a wild night out.

So put on your dancing shoes and your 1950s outfits because theatrical scenes, gender segregation, dancing classes and a full on rock ‘n’ roll takeover await you.

“I can’t say any more because it is all going to be a big surprise, but you can also expect a hot dog diner, an auction of promises which includes prizes such as tea with BBC Jekyll and Hyde’s Tom Bateman, and entertainment from award-winning rock ‘n’ roll band, The Bluejays.

“Speakeasy II: Back to the Fifties will be a night to remember, and all in aid of a good cause,” Anna adds.

“All funds raised will go towards supporting the work of Flintlock in making high-quality, accessible theatre right here in Oxford.

“And the social club is the best place to have it because it is 90-years-old and comes complete with disco balls, ballroom floors and vintage lighting. So it will be a totally immersive theatrical experience,” promises Anna.
