AUTUMN aromas blew across an East Oxford green space as families celebrated the season’s finest crops.

Freshly-made chutneys, oven-baked bread and newly-squeezed apple juice tantalised visitors’ tastebuds during the afternoon festivities at Barracks Lane Community Garden on Saturday.

Oxford Spires Academy student Arthur Wroe-Pattullo, who often visits the Garden, had his hands full with golden fruits.

The 11-year-old said: “I think it’s really good. You make new friends and you get to take part in the different activities. It’s nice having the garden close to my home.”

Gardener Matt Morton was on hand to help residents squeeze the finest juice out of their homegrown apples. The 43-year-old, of Hawkins Street, said: “It’s the best way to make sure the apples don’t go to waste by making juice out of them .”

Visitors also had a chance to admire a new area of land, which officially opened in August after a £9,650 grant from the National Lottery Awards for All programme.
