YOUNGSTERS from a school in Barton staged a harvest festival with a difference.

Instead of a celebration with food and drink, children from Bayards Hill Primary School, in Waynflete Road, launched a shoebox appeal last week.

Pupils will bring in items to place in a shoebox, which will be sent to children in Bulgaria.

The festival is linked with the Trussell Trust Shoebox Appeal, and staff and children are being asked to donate items such as toothpaste, soap and small toys.

The school said its vision was to have more than 200 shoeboxes wrapped by the end of November, so they could be delivered to families by Christmas.

Headteacher Rachel Medley said the children were excited.

Asia Sitkowaka, eight, said: “It’s very good. If I was a girl in Bulgaria and wouldn’t have anything for Christmas and if someone in England or any country bought something for me I would be so happy.”
