FIRE crews tackled a blaze in a bin shelter in William Lucy Way, Oxford, last night.

They were called to the scene shortly after 9pm to reports the building was on fire.

Two fire engines were dispatched and crews discovered flames coming through the roof of the shelter.

Luke Barrett, who lives nearby, said: “My neighbour said he saw four people standing out there at 9pm. He then came knocking on my door telling me to move my car in case it got damaged. There was a lot of rubbish in that outhouse. It wouldn’t just start by accident.”

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: “The problem is the building doors have been very badly designed. Someone had dumped a load of stuff in the bin as well.”

Incident Commander Watch Manager Paul Harding said: “Please ensure any items placed in bins are fully extinguished prior to disposal. Cars parked in the vicinity could also have been damaged but the quick action of the our crews prevented the fire from spreading further."
