Charlton keeper Nick Pope is hoping his side can bounce back from Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Blackburn by putting in a brave performance against rivals Crystal Palace.

The Addicks make the short trip to Selhurst Park on Wednesday in the Capital One Cup third round off the back of two consecutive defeats to Huddersfield and Blackburn.

Pope made a number of excellent saves at Ewood Park, including two outstanding stops to deny Jordan Rhodes.

However, he was ultimately still beaten twice by the Scotland international striker in the 3-0 loss, although the Charton stopper believes Wednesday night’s cup tie is the perfect opportunity for his team to show the quality they possess.

“Obviously it’s difficult to take the defeat to Blackburn,” said the 23-year-old.

“We do have a down dressing room because of that defeat and the way we played.

“But, we need to focus now and look ahead to the match on Wednesday and try and get a victory.”

The one-time Welling loanee is currently the number one keeper at The Valley in the absence of Stephen Henderson.

Pope has yet to face Crystal Palace as a Charlton player, but the stopper is aware of how much the game means to the Addicks supporters.

He explained: “The easiest thing about the game on Wednesday is that the players will be pumped up for it because of the rivalry.

“It’s no good feeling down about ourselves, or feeling sorry, because it’s a massive game to go into.

“It’s important we go into that game, give a good account of ourselves and do our best to get in the next round.”

Charlton slipped to 15th in the Championship table following the defeat to Gary Bowyer’s side and Pope admitted Saturday’s game is one they will look to forget quickly.

He revealed: “It’s hard to be pleased about my personal performance to be honest, as it was a disappointing three goals to concede and was not a great performance overall.

“We can try and encourage the squad to improve, but they all know when they have made a mistake.

“I don’t think you can look back on a 3-0 defeat really, despite some good performances out there.”
