ALMOST 1,000 people are set to turn up to a demonstration on the refugee crisis this Sunday.

The ‘Refugees Welcome’ protest has been organised by and for local people who would like to see the UK Government take greater responsibility for the refugee crisis.

It will take place outside the Sheldonian Theatre, Broad Street from 3pm. Participants of all ages are invited to come along and bring banners pledging their support for refugees and asylum seekers.

A range of campaigns and organisations including charity Asylum Welcome, OXFAM and the Green Party have so far confirmed they will attend. A total of 962 people have said they are coming on Facebook.

Earlier today, Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK will now accommodate 4,000 refugees fleeing war-torn countries such as Syria. Since the start of the civil war in 2011, four million people have been displaced.

Sally Copley, Oxfam's Head of Global Policy and Campaigns, said: "This event is the latest message from people in Oxford and the rest of the UK that we want to help those who have been forced to flee their homes in Syria and elsewhere.

“The Government has rightly responded to that concern but people gathering outside the Sheldonian this Sunday will be asking them to make clear that Britain is prepared to take at least its fair share of people in desperate need."

A large ‘Refugees Welcome’ banner will be hung up outside the theatre, inspired by those held by German football fans at recent matches.
