OXFORD United pulled out of moves for high-profile targets over concerns they risked disrupting the spirit within the camp, according to head coach Michael Appleton.

A quiet deadline day is expected at the club before the transfer window closes at 6pm.

There had been hopes of a “wow signing”, mentioned by Appleton at a fans’ forum last month.

Talks were held with several potential signings, but did not go any further with the U’s boss concerned it may destabilise the strong unit already at the club.

Appleton said: “The biggest thing we’ve tried to do from a recruitment point of view is get the right people.

“It’s not just about the player, so if we feel they’re not going to fit into the group we’ve got to take stock and think ‘are we doing the best thing in the interests of the club and all the players?’ “There were two or three and after conversations it didn’t quite feel right.

“We don’t want players who are going to come here and be Big Time Charlies, in a nutshell.

“It’s not about one player, it’s about managing 22 or 25 players and they’ve all got wants and needs.

“You’ve got to be very careful if you’ve got one person who is too needy.”

A move for a third goalkeeper, who would allow Max Crocombe to be loaned out, has been in the works for more than a week.

  • Michael Appleton says any new additions to his squad will have to fit in with the tight unit

The unnamed stopper is a free agent, so is not bound by the transfer window, and Appleton does not expect anyone else to arrive today.

He said: “I think so unless something drastically happens.

“We’ve got a small squad but it’s balanced and there is quality in there.

“I would be amazed if anything happens before the window shuts, other than the goalkeeper.”

Crocombe will not leave on a temporary deal until a goalkeeper arrives, so looks set to wait for the loan window to open next week before he can move.

Michael Collins is available to leave after falling down the pecking order in midfield.

The 29-year-old is likely to move back north, but United are prepared to loan him out if a transfer cannot be arranged today.
