A SUMMERTOWN mother and daughter who are fanatical about facial hair want to bring their passion to the masses.

Sue Higgins, 47, and daughter Faith King, 22, are planning to host an ‘Oxford Beard Festival’ this September and hope the event will be a bristling success.

All proceeds will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

The duo came up with the idea several years ago after watching American television series ‘Whisker Wars’, which delves into the world of competitive bearding.

Nursery nurse Miss Higgins, whose boyfriend Graham is in a band called ‘Beard of Destiny’, said: “We decided to host our first event three years ago.

“It wasn’t very well attended, with about 100 people throughout the day. Now we are in contact with beard clubs around the country, including the British Beard and Moustache Club and the Wessex Beardsmen, and will get a lot of support.”

The Beard Festival will be held on Saturday, September 19, at the James Street Tavern, off Cowley Road.

As well as live music, visitors will be treated to burlesque dancing and competitions for the best beard and best moustache.

A range of grooming products will be on sale. Barber James Craig, from barber chain Murdock London, will be on hand for those in need of a trim.

Miss Higgins said: “We want to set up our own Oxford Beard Club. It’s a good city because of all the students; they’re a bit hipster and there’s lots of beards.”

Daughter Faith added: “There are so many beards but nothing going on for them. Me and mum thought, let’s make a night of it.

“We chose Prostate Cancer UK because it’s a disease associated with men but close to everyone’s heart.”
