A GRAND total of 900 photos were received for the Ashmolean’s first photography competition.

Organisers at the Oxford museum were blown away by the number of “beautiful” photos sent in by people of all ages. They are currently in the process of choosing the best but have revealed some of their favourites before announcing the winner.

To enter the competition, titled #MyOxfordView, budding snappers had to submit a photo of their view of the city either through email, Instagram, Flickr or Twitter using that hashtag.

Competition organiser Sarah Casey said she was delighted to have received nearly 1,000 entries.

She said: “People have sent in beautiful photographs of Oxford, of both famous landmarks and less well-known locations, and we’re grateful to everyone who has taken the time to send in their pictures.

“We are looking forward to seeing which entries the judges choose, and to displaying the winning photos at the museum later in the year.”

The #MyOxfordView photography competition 2015 is part of the Ashmolean Museum’s campaign to become a permanent home to JMW Turner’s painting of the High Street, Oxford.

As reported previously in the Oxford Mail, private donors raised the final £60,000 of £860,000 needed to buy the iconic Turner painting of the city in just four weeks.

The painting is currently on display in the Ashmolean’s Welcome Space.

The winners in each category of the #MyOxfordView competition will have their photo displayed in the Ashmolean. Winners will be announced in September.
