TWO of Britain’s best synchronised swimmers came to Oxford to train the “next generation” of Olympic hopefuls.

Team GB stars Hannah Green and 2012 Olympian Katie Clark taught a group of young girls to perform complex routines at the city’s newest pool.

The week-long course saw children aged between nine and 13 receive first-hand training from two of the UK’s best synchronised swimmers.

The nine girls had two-and-a-half hours’ training every day for a whole week.

The masterclasses were organised by Fusion at the Leys Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool.

Head swimming teacher Faye Bowles said: “We try to promote children to swim as much as possible during the summer.

“We do a lot of crash courses and more advanced swimming classes, but this was really to break it up.

“We ran these classes before in the May half-term, but only for an hour a day.

“They were so popular that we had to have Hannah and Katie back.”

The 23-year-old said that the girls were “very capable”.

The Carterton resident added: “This was really to inspire the next generation of synchronised swimmers.

“We wanted to bring the children of Oxford a quality swimming instructor they would not be able to access.

“Hannah and Katie were absolutely great.”

Parents and families got to see the choreographed water acrobatics in a session last Friday, as well as a routine performed solely by the Team GB swimmers.

Amber Jansen, who lives in Hyacinth Walk, Greater Leys, was one of the youngsters who took part.

The nine-year-old said: “I enjoyed it a lot and really liked how we learnt how to do the routines.

“The teachers made it fun.”

Her mother Elaine Poyser, 44, said it was fantastic to see her daughter performing moves in the pool.

She added: “Amber also did the classes in half-term this year and absolutely loved it.

“It was just wonderful, I was so proud.

“My husband and I were there and Amber’s two brothers – it was wonderful.”

The mother-of-three added: “It’s hard work and dedication and I think Amber realised that.

“But this has given her a new lease of life.

“She does a lot of swimming, but this really broke up the other classes. If this has sparked something in her I will be very pleased.”
