A man has been arrested following a heavy police presence reported by residents near the Thames in South Oxford.

People living in homes near Donnington Bridge said armed officers and police vans had been seen entering the area.

Jane Madden, of Weirs Lane, told the Oxford Mail: “The police have been everywhere for the last hour and a half and there is a pretty heavy presence.

“They are stopping people from going down to the river near Donnington Bridge and we saw them go in the direction of Long Bridges [bathing place].

“The helicopter was circling earlier but now seems to have left.”

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman James Williams said officers had been investigating an assault without injury that had taken place at Folly Bridge.

He said a 24-year-old man from Milton Keynes had been arrested.

Mr Williams added: “He is currently in custody.”
