POLICE have still not confirmed whether they have identified two people killed in a crash on the M40.

The driver and passenger of a black Vauxhall Astra died after their vehicle crashed between junction 10 and 9 of the motorway on Monday night.

Officers were still trying to identify them on Tuesday night but since then have not said whether they have been successful.

The crash damaged the barrier in the central reservation of the M40 and the road will have to close to allow repairs to be carried out.

Highways Agency spokeswoman Sarah Silk said: “We are replacing the barrier in the next few days or so following the incident on Monday.

“The exact date depends on what else is happening on the network. It will not require a full closure so disruption will be minimised. It is what we would call extensive damage.”

The crash happened at about 8.30pm and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and put out a blaze in the car.

One lane of the southbound carriageway was closed until Tuesday afternoon as a result.

The driver and passenger of the Vauxhall Astra were among four people who were killed on Oxfordshire’s roads in 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday.

Two other crashes killed a 43-year-old woman from Abingdon and a man in his 70s.

The woman died after a collision in Sutton Courtenay on Monday afternoon and the man died after a four-vehicle collision on the A420 near Faringdon on Tuesday.
