A GROUP of youths allegedly entering the Windrush and Evenlode tower blocks in Blackbird Leys to take drugs are being closed in on by police.

At the latest meeting of Blackbird Leys Parish Council, police community support officer Barry Sheehan reported two separate groups of teenagers had been using the towers to “smoke drugs and cause a general nuisance” over the past five to six weeks.

He said: “One group now seems to have kept away. The other group seem to persist in going back to the towers.

“We are doing some more investigation and obtaining evidence, working with the city council’s anti-social behaviour team.”

Mr Sheehan added that after hours spent looking at CCTV images, most of the group had now been identified and letters would be sent to their parents.

Many of those involved were reportedly not from the estate, but from across the city according to Mr Sheehan.

Evenlode caretaker Alan Woodward said there had been a “spate” of similar issues in the tower of late, but added: “I haven’t seen any trouble for about three weeks.

“The council nip it in the bud quickly and the police response was quite good. They were very thorough going through CCTV cameras.”

He added this was not the first time residents had raised concerns about trouble in the towers.

He said: “It’s always a problem and will never go away.

“There are always a few stragglers who are interested in nothing but making trouble. The only way I can see the problem being solved is if they had a concierge or a guard at night time; it’s always at night.

“It’s somewhere warm for them to go.”
