SOLDIERS who died in the First and Second World Wars were remembered this weekend as young and old gathered to pay their respects.

The Turning the Pages ceremony held at the Military Chapel, Christ Church Cathedral, St Aldate’s, at 11am on Saturday saw ex-servicemen, cadets, friends and family pay respect to those who fought and died for their county.

Colonel Mike Vince MBE read out the names of 10 soldiers of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry who died during the two wars.

The names of five men from Grandpont, South Oxford, were read; Arthur Belcher, Ernest William Brooks, Arthur Thomas Dolley, George Edwin Lovell Simpson and Charles George Tyrrell lost their lives during the First World War. Charles George Tyrrell’s great nephew, Geoff Tyrrell, 40, attended the service for the first time.

The Headington resident said he had found out about the 66 Men of Grandpont project and realised his great uncle was one of them.

He said: “I have been to the grave in France but I didn’t know much more than that. It was a very moving service.”

Mr Vince added: “I hope it was very nice for the relatives. The cadets from Abingdon were here too and that’s good because we need to keep remembering the soldiers who fought and pass it on.”
