A HANDWOVEN map of an Oxfordshire village made by locals was displayed at a newly-renovated village hall.

Nearly 100 residents of Ashbury, near Faringdon, aged four to 86, male and female, contributed in one way or another to the Ashbury Parish textile map.

People stitched their own house, flora and fauna, the village allotments, pond, the local bus, even the postman and much more under the watchful eyes of some local artists.

Stuart Roper designed the original layout while Anne Griffiths provided expert help and guidance in making it.

Diane Lovegrove stitched every single piece onto the background of the map and Margaret Smith was “map coordinator”.

The finished article measured five feet by five feet and was revealed at the reopening of the refurbished Ashbury Village Hall on Saturday, April 18, attended by some 200 people.

Mrs Smith said: “This is a fantastic piece of community collaboration and the map is a vibrant representation of the parish.”

She added: “The hall has been sympathetically renovated and retains many original features. It makes an ideal venue for private parties.”
