A 24-YEAR-OLD woman continued to claim benefits as a single mother despite her child being taken into care.

Blackburn magistrates heard Kimberley Kenyon had been hoping to get the child back but the decision was eventually taken for it to be permanently adopted.

Kenyon, of Rydal Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to failing to notify a change of circumstances which affected her entitlement to income support and child tax credit.

She was remanded on bail until April 22 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said there had been a total overpayment of £4,885.

Damian Pickup, defending, said the background to the case was “distressing”.

He said the claim had initially been genuine but after Kenyon had been the victim of domestic violence the local authority intervened and said she would not be able to keep her baby if she had contact with her former partner.

The baby was eventually removed.
