Guy Luzon admitted a draw was probably a fair outcome after Charlton were held 1-1 at The Valley by Fulham.

The west Londoners broke the deadlock on eight minutes when Michael Turner’s long ball forward was flicked on by Matt Smith and headed home by Ross McCormack with Stephen Henderson off his line.

But Charlton were back on terms eight minutes later, Morgan Fox’s excellent delivery just failing to find Frederic Bulot but Johann Gudmundsson was ideally placed at the back post to convert from close range.

The goal looked suspiciously offside and Fulham opposite number Kit Symons said as much afterwards, although Luzon was reluctant to speculate on the lack of a flag.

He said: “I don’t know. If it was offside it was offside but the level of the referee in this league is great. They do an excellent job.

“If they make one or two mistakes in the season it is normal but I think we have great referees in this league.”

Gudmundsson somehow contrived to miss an absolute sitter shortly afterwards when in an almost identical position, this time Igor Vetokele the provider.

Luzon added: “Johann played well tonight in defence and offence.

“He scored one and had a chance to score a second but it is part of the game of football.

“We cannot blame him because when players run and give everything for the team it is the game.

“A draw reflects what happened on the field because also Fulham had their semi chances to score in the second half, as they did in the first half.

“We were a little bit poor in the line of defence in the first half with their long balls but in the second half we managed it better.”

Chances were few and far between after the break, the best one falling in the 89th minute to Smith but his effort flew over the bar when it looked much easier to hit the target.

The Charlton boss said: “I think it was a tough game against a great opponent.

“They have a lot of quality, they move the ball well, they press well, they have the target man - the tall one – and they arrived here to The Valley to play positive football.

“Also we tried to play positive.

“We scored one, we had the chance with Johann to score the second and with Tony Watt in the second half but by then I think a draw reflects what was happening on the field.”
