A LEISURE firm is proposing a money-spinning use for Oxford’s planned flood relief channel by offering to build a log flume there.

A spokesman for new company Flumes Of Oxfordshire Limited, which has come up with the the plans, said: “We want to create a massive log flume through the heart of one of England’s most iconic cities.

“With the famous Dreaming Spires offering the perfect backdrop for passengers, we’re using the working title ‘Flume with a View’ for the project. This is a win-win situation.”

The company wants to split revenues from the project with the city and county councils.

The Western Conveyance scheme Could be as wide as the River Thames. It would run from Seacourt Stream north of Botley Road to the River Thames at Sandford Lock, diverting water away from Oxford to stop it spreading across the city.

The log flume project is at an early stage, and no planning permission has been sought yet. But opponents have poured scorn on the idea.

Botley resident Ivor Chestikov, 74, said: “Oxford is a world-famous seat of learning, not a theme park.

“What next? A zipwire from Carfax Tower?”
