MOTHERWELL manager Mark McGhee labelled his side's performance as "embarrassing" after the Fir Park side were bundled out of the Homecoming Scottish Cup last night.

The game looked destined to be heading for extra-time before Billy Mehmet settled the affair and McGhee later acknowledged that his side didn't deserve to take anything from the tie.

"I thought we were poor," he said. "Most of them tried hard enough and I couldn't fault the effort, but not a lot was right for us tonight. We had no real fluency about our play.

"St Mirren didn't make any more chances than we did. But I don't think we deserved anything out the game and I don't think we deserved to win it.

"We needed our big players - the likes of David Clarkson, and he didn't play well. I'm disappointed in David and I'm disappointed with the back four conceding the goal that we did.

"We are all complicit. We all share the responsibility. It was poor and we got what we deserved.

"I almost feel embarrassed. Embarrassed that we put in a performance like that in front of the TV cameras and embarrassed for our supporters.

"I felt as though both teams huffed and puffed, but the game just never really got going."

On-loan Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan was the only Motherwell player that McGhee deemed worthy of pass marks and he couldn't hide his irritation at the fact some of the more experienced players in his squad just didn't seem to turn up.

"I thought Cillian was our best player and we have no right to ask that of him," said the Motherwell manager.

"He is a player on loan and I thought he was terrific, but the rest didn't do enough to support that. It is disappointing, but we have a big game now to prepare for.

That said, I can barely even think about Sunday's game against Celtic because I am so disappointed at that display."
