The mystery surrounding sightings of a strange UFO over West Oxfordshire has been solved.

Reports of an unusual object in the sky over Witney on the night of the total lunar eclipse led to speculation of extra-terrestrial involvement.

But the origin of the object was much more down to earth. Rather than Mars or Venus, the object actually took off from Moorland Close, Witney.

Witnesses at the time described the unexplained object as "a slow-moving orange light". The mystery was solved when the Oxford Mail was contacted by Sgt Steve Ilott, of Thames Valley Police - who bought the 'UFO' on Internet site eBay.

Rather than alien technology, the 'spacecraft' was a Chinese-style wish balloon, made of paper and wire.

Sgt Illot, who is based in Wantage, ordered the balloon as a birthday surprise for his wife Gail, and launched it from their garden on Saturday, March 3.

The balloon uses a small flame to give it lift. It rose to a height of 200 ft, before drifting off towards Oxford - where people also reported strange lights in the sky.

Sgt Ilot said: "My wife and I had a good laugh, apparently at the expense of the residents of Witney and further afield, because we knew the answer to the mystery.

"We couldn't believe it when we saw it in the paper. We couldn't stop laughing."

He added: "Even though I appreciate that Witney does have some strange goings-on, this is most certainly one of those that has a fully documented explanation.

"To anybody who saw it, it was a UFO, because it was unidentified, it was flying, and it was an object - unfortunately, it wasn't extra- terrestrial.

"It does make for a good story though - and made my wife's birthday one she won't forget."

One of the people who saw the 'UFO' was Derek Hall, of Jacobs Mill, Witney. He said he was glad the mystery had been solved.

He said: "What made it strange was the fact that it changed direction. It's good to know what it was."

Brilliant! Who needs crackpot conspiracy theories when the truth is far more entertaining?!

This would seem funny if a teen had done it, but a police Sergeant? Come on Sgt Ilott, surely you would have more common sense than to send a potential incendiery device into the air? If that's the calibre of intelligence TV Police are allowing in, then I'm very worried. Oh, and another thing. If a teenager had let one of these things into the atmosphere, I'm sure that the affable Sgt would have cautioned/arrested said teen. However, I'm digressing.

Don't get me wrong, it's good that the object was identified, but it's idiots like this that give the UFO scene a bad name. There will be a lot of angry people out there feeling annoyed that they are having the proverbial mickey taken out of them.

How childish can you get. Grow up man, and get a life. Not only that those balloons are dangerous, and should be banned. Just think yourself lucky that it never landed on a farmers barn, or worse a thatched cottage roof. God, there ARE SOME IDIOTS' ABOUT!!!

Why do people take life so seriously - I would love it if my husband would get me such a romantic birthday present!

The fact that some people thought it was a UFO just makes it funnier!

(and I would not mind if it was for my son to give or float!)

All you people against this, just remember the 5 th November!!
More risk of starting fires than this UFO

Sighting Nov 5th is a different matter. Fireworks have to pass high standards of manufacture, yes there are failures but generally speaking emergancy services are on a high level of alert and 99.9% of the time it's foolishness that causes accidents and problems. discretely letting off a flying uncontrolable fire bomb is a best irresponsible and at worst attempted arson.

I hope this officer recieves re training or gets a public telling off for this act of lunacy.

I quoted Nov 5th not because of failures but the iresponsible way that nobody knows where those rockets are going.
to land.
The fire service is always on High alert.
many of these UFO objects are sold but I have not heard of any concerns before, perhaps it is just because this man is a PC!

KM has it about right. I have worried about our police force for many years constantly reading about speeding "to test a car" and drinking and driving while on duty. We deserve better. All I would cite is the Chief Constable of North Wales as an example of the Senior ranks and then add Ian Blair from London. Makes us proud doesn't it?
How about a survey about how much we respect our police?
Would be interesting.
