Mystery surrounds the sighting of a "spooky" UFO over west Oxfordshire.

An object, described as "a slow-moving, orange light" was seen passing over Witney during the lunar eclipse two Saturdays ago.

Among those who saw the object, shortly after 10.30pm, were Derek Hall, of Jacobs Mill, Witney, and his girlfriend Paula Siford.

There were also reports of one or more unidentified objects flying over Oxford. Yet a week on, their identity still remains unknown.

Mr Hall, a 43-year-old sales executive for a security company, said: "It was spooky. We were looking at the eclipse when we saw this bright glow, just to the side of the moon.

"It appeared as a slow-moving, orange light - as if a light aircraft was in flames. It was moving in a northerly direction, then bore round to the east. It disappeared in the direction of Woodstock.

"There was no sound at all. It was very strange."

He said it was not a plane, and could not have been a meteorite, as it changed direction.

He added: "We thought there might have been something in the news since, but there hasn't been. I still don't know what it was, but I'm sure others must have seen it.

"I don't know whether the object we saw was extra-terrestrial, but it was certainly an unidentified flying object."

A Witney householder, who asked not to be named, said: "We saw it up in the sky. It was very unusual."

Another witness was 14-year-old Lewis Ashton, who watched the object from his home in Burford Road, Witney. The Wood Green School pupil said: "It wasn't a plane or a satellite. I don't know what it was, but it seemed quite strange."

Mr Hall contacted the Anomalous Phenomena Research Agency - which investigates UFO sightings in Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley.

Research co-ordinator Brian P James said there had been sightings in Oxford at about the same time.

He said: "We did get a report of a set of four low-flying lights heading east to west over Christ Church Meadow in Oxford. They were so low the witness thought it was an aircraft crashing. These lights split into two pairs, which then went off to the north and south. The witness phoned her daughter in Barton, who then saw another, or similar, four lights coming from the east."

RAF Brize Norton spokesman Katie Zasada said no aircraft had been taking off or landing at the time of the eclipse.

She said: "We had no reports of strange lights in the sky and there are no records of unusual activity."

A spokesman for Oxford Airport, in Kidlington, said no unusual reports had been received.

All my pictures of the eclipse (taken in Headington soon after it started) came out terribly, with the light of the moon smeared so that it looked like a tadpole. (I have a funny feeling that you need a tripod and a telescope to take decent pictures of an object so far away).

But they do show an orange glow to the right of the moon that I couldn't understand at all.

well,if the raf aircraft weer not landingb or taking off then maybe they were circling the moon waiting to land!

I am a UFO investigator based in Blackpool and I'm reasonably certain that the lights seen during the eclipse were balloons. These 'UFO balloons' can be bought on the internet and have been seen all over the country. I actually filmed some of these in June last year. They are a very strange sight as they glide across the sky, so I can understand people getting excited about them.

Rob-Thank you for clearing that up! Do you personally believe in UFO'S? My partner said the sightings on the night of the eclipse were probably balloons but me being an idiot thought he meant Hot air balloons! lol

Sounds just like fire balloons: http://www.overflite.com/

Very cheap to buy, or even cheaper to make with a bin liners, some thin steel wire and a solid fire-lighter. Launching 4 and 10 together looks amazing - they sometimes hold a formation before pairing of as they reach different wind speeds.

Sometimes dripping wax can make them look like they are firing at something.

I was photographing the moon with a tripod mounted camera and on the photos you can see an orange and a green light near the moon. They move fom shot to shot. I thought this was a problem with my camera but maybe not!

Sorry folks. I don't believe in either UFO or ghost (I used to!). I had my childhood encounter still couldn't explain it but I am sure it was something silly (like a balloon). I believe life on other planets but just not little green men visiting us. George W Bush would probably scare them away anyway as they really do have WMD =P

Agree. Orange light=toy hot air baloon. We made them with a dry cleaning bag and drinking straws with birthday candles. They do look very large in the dark and do strange things once they start to collapse and the plastic catches fire.

I also saw an orange light during the lunar eclipse. I live in North London, it was heading towards the south east. It seemed to move in a steady movement. I'm gutted I couldn't get my telescope quick enough, so i could have seen if it was a balloon or something else.

While observing from South Leigh I spotted a cluster of lights over west witney. These lights were faint and not identifiable as a flying object although stood out because of their formation. I also observed a light cutting through the atmosphere above South Leigh before fading out which I assumed was light from the moon as it diuappeared into the shadow of the earth. If there was anything out there that night we will not be told about it.

I always wonder, why UFO sightings are frequently reported in Europe and amercian countries? why not in the other parts of the world? I think ETs may be knowing Europe and Amercian countries are developed countries!! ha ha ha

Strikes me that lots of folks don't have much to attend themselves to. What with making a living, taking care of my family and my house, my pets, keeping up with the war and preposterous actions of our politicians, who has time for sky gazing? I did as a child, but as the Good Book says, "when I was a child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man I put away childish things." God bless everyone, and if you're looking for portents, watch the news and read your Bibles.

There's always one bible quoting American on a thread somewhere, eh?

What you, my friend, need to do learn to tolerate other cultures, and stop trying to impose your view on others. ;)

i also saw this strange light with 5 friends.....a policeman also watched it with us...it wasnt any balloon or fire lantern,it was a solid round object which stopped and broke into 3 and all of the 3 of them stayed stationery for a few minutes then one suddenly sped so fast to the north it must have been broken the sound barrier...the other 2 didnt move until the other one came back very fast and then stopped suddenly......then all the 3 objects went became one and it suddenly rushed forward and stopped then shot off at very very fast speed in the direction of Aynho...this was very odd.....the policeman said he would report it as being a ufo...he said that back in the 1970s there were hundreds of ufos seen in the area..

I saw this bright orange slow moving round looking thingy rise up from the ground. It was moving towards us and then away from us. I was scared. I saw nitrous on the back with flames coming down and then it disappeared.
