A 44-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court this morning charged with 19 offences against 10 people following Thursday's anti-slavery raids.

Timothy Joyce was one of eight people arrested when police executed search warrants at Redbridge Hollow, off Old Abingdon Road in South Oxford, on Thursday.

Last night they charged the Redbridge Hollow resident with 19 offences and this morning he appeared in Oxford Magistrates' Court.

Joyce did not enter a plea and his case will now be sent to Oxford Crown Court for a hearing on April 17. He was also refused bail.

Joyce faces:

  • One charge of conspiracy to hold another person in servitude, between April 6 2010 and February 9 2015.
  • One charge of conspiracy to require another person to perform forced / compulsory labour between April 6 2010 and February 9 2015.
  • Two charges of harassment, between January 1 2007 and October 1 2014 and on September 27 2014.
  • Two charges of knowingly require another person to perform forced / compulsory labour between April 6 2010 and October 1 2014, and between April 6 2010 and December 31 2011.
  • Two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm between April 6 2010 and December 31 2011 and between July 1 2011 and October 1 2011.
  • One charge of assault by beating which relates to an incident on March 26 2015.
  • Four charges of making threats to kill, which relate to offences on August 14 2014, September 25 2014, September 27 2014 and between June 1 2011 and December 31 2011.
  • One charge of affray, which relates to an offence on August 14 2014.
  • One charge of blackmail between July 13 2014 and October 1 2014 Four charges of fraud between April 1 2011 and May 23 2011, between September 22 2014 and September 26 2014, between September 24 2014 and September 27 2014 and between September 22 2014 and September 26 2014.

Police spokeswoman Connie Primmer said the charges related to 10 people.

Yesterday Helen Collins, also of Redbridge Hollow, appeared in court charged with conspiracy with others to require another person to perform forced compulsory labour between April 2010 and February 2015, keeping another person in servitude between the same dates and of conspiracy to defraud between April 2002 and February 2015.

Collins was also remanded in custody and will appear before Oxford Crown Court on April 17.

As well as the eight arrested at Redbridge, two other teenagers were arrested in raids in Blackbird Leys and Rose Hill in Oxford. 

The latest information about the other arrested people is that a 47-year-old man was still in custody yesterday.

Two men, aged 44 and 20, have been released on police bail until May 29.

Three men, aged 44, 21 and 19, have been bailed until May 26.

A 27-year-old man has been bailed until May 4.

A 56-year-old man was released without charge. 

Police have only so far announced what has happened with Collins and Joyce.
